Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP)

The purpose of the Access to Information Act is to provide every Canadian citizen, permanent resident or individual who is present in Canada but who is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident within the meaning of the Immigration Act and all corporations that are present in Canada with the right of access to information in any form and controlled by most federal government institutions, subject to certain specific and limited exceptions.

The Privacy Act imposes obligations on some 150 federal government departments and agencies to respect privacy rights by limiting the collection, use and disclosure of personal information. The Privacy Act gives individuals the right to information recorded in any form and controlled by most federal institutions. This website describes the Office's responsibilities with respect to the above-mentioned acts and provides contacts, downloadable request forms and other related information.

Mandate

Information and Privacy Rights Administration

The Directorate's mandate is to implement and administer the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act and to ensure that legislative policies and procedures established by Government of Canada central agencies (the Treasury Board, the Public Service Commission, the Privy Council Office, federal Cabinet and the Prime Minister's Office) are respected within the Office of the Office of the Commissioner of Lobbying.
